1st Annual Impact San Antonio Grant Awarded to
The Association of Retarded Citizens (The Arc) of San Antonio
The Arc was founded in 1954 by parents who needed support and services for their children with special needs.
At that time children with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities could not be enrolled in
public schools, and options were very limited for parents who did not want to institutionalize their children in
state schools.
As special education programs and other services for children with developmental disabilities expanded in the
early 1970s, The Arc shifted its focus to working toward full community integration for children and adults with
mental retardation. Over the years since our founding, The Arc has provided San Antonio and surrounding
areas with a variety of programs that work toward achieving the mission of enhancing the quality of life for
persons with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities.
