We normally profile one member each month, but this month we have something different — a mother-daughter duo! Michelle and her daughter Virginia are enthusiastic about their memberships in Impact San Antonio. Here’s what they have to say.
How did you first hear about Impact SA?
Michelle: From Impact SA Board member and dear family friend Jennifer Bligh.
Virginia: I initially discovered Impact SA through Jennifer Bligh, but I was encouraged to join after hearing about my mom’s first-year experience.
How long have you each been a member?
Michelle: Since early 2020, as a shared member.
Virginia: I joined my shared membership this past cycle, in spring 2021.
What prompted you to join Impact SA?
Michelle: Its synergetic nature appeals to me. I like the idea of pooling my contribution with those of fellow philanthropic-minded women to create a positive impact where our community’s needs are significant.
Virginia: I am always looking for ways to become more involved in the nonprofit world, especially locally. Listening to my mom share about the innovative organizations here in SA seeking funds to do good inspired me to join the team and be a part of the funding and process myself.
What do you enjoy most about being a member?
Michelle: I’ve enjoyed collaborating (virtually when necessary) with fellow Impact SA members.
Virginia: Being introduced to so many wonderful new local organizations and having the opportunity to hear about all the neat projects they’re working on.
What activities have you participated in, such as attending events or volunteering on a committee? Is there something you’d like to do in the future?
Michelle: I enjoyed serving on the Health & Wellness grant review committee my first year, and I look forward to my new role as a grant liaison (for San Antonio Mennonite Church) this year.
Virginia: I attended the virtual new member orientation and Grant Award Night at the Witte. I am interested in serving both on a grant review committee and as a grant liaison in the future.
What do you find most inspiring about Impact SA?
Michelle: I’m impressed by the generosity of San Antonio women and the organization and effectiveness of this talented group.
Virginia: Impact SA proves it really is possible to make a difference in our communities when we work together.
What do each of you do for a living?
Michelle: My professional background includes 17 years in insurance sales, event planning and fundraising for nonprofit organizations. I also spent most of 15 years managing our household, raising our two children (now ages 20 and 26), and volunteering in school, Boy Scout, neighborhood and faith communities. I recently returned to the insurance field with a focus on Medicare products.
Virginia: I recently returned from serving as a social worker in Belize City for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. I am currently studying for the LSAT and GRE with plans to pursue a social justice/nonprofit-oriented career as either an attorney or with a master’s degree in international relations/policy.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Michelle: I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Impact SA community.
