I was introduced to Impact San Antonio by Jackie Pugh and joined after attending my first member recruitment event. I have been impressed by the professionalism, organization, and passion of this group of volunteer women. The fact that 100% of donations go towards the grants awarded, and that all the administrative work is done by volunteers is extraordinary.
During my time practicing medicine in San Antonio, I realized that the social determinants of health are equally or even more important to population and individual health than medical care alone. These determinants are access and quality of healthcare and education, social and community context, economic stability, and neighborhood environment. These are exactly the issues being addressed by the grant process at Impact San Antonio.
Claudia Hura was born in Cleveland Ohio. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue in 1976 and an MD degree from Ohio State University in 1979. Her residency training in Internal Medicine was completed at Indiana University. She came to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Nephrology Division in 1983 and has remained in San Antonio ever since. Her nephrology career has included both private practice and academic medicine. During that time, much of her practice was in underserved areas of the city. She developed a love of the community with its warmth and welcoming cultural diversity, but also witnessed the magnitude of the poverty and need that exists here.
After retirement, Claudia completed the San Antonio Master Leadership Program as a member of class XV. She has remained active on the Methodist Healthcare Ministries Board serving on various committees. She retired in 2023 as Chairman of the Wesley Primary Care Board and remains active on the Methodist Healthcare System Community Board. She currently chairs their Bioethics Committee and is actively involved in bioethics education and consultation. She is also currently serving on the Thrivewell Cancer Foundation Board. As a member of Impact San Antonio, she has been a grant financial reviewer for the Arts and Education Committee and has served as a member volunteer. She is now Co-Chair of Grant Oversight and Outcomes.
In her free times Claudia loves family time, international travel, food and cooking, gardening, reading and outdoor activities.
