After hearing about Impact SA from a friend, Kathy Babb joined Impact SA to learn more about it—and quickly got involved. From grant committees to serving as a liaison during COVID, she loves getting to know local nonprofits and being part of such a welcoming, all-volunteer group. She’s always encouraging friends to check it out, too. When she’s not volunteering, you’ll find her enjoying local events or working on her golf game.
How did you hear about the organization?
My friend, Cathy Ritter, invited me to Impact, but it was a few years before I became a member due to other commitments. When I joined, I was determined to understand the good work Impact was doing in our community and so I became part of a grant review committee.
What has been your favorite Impact experience so far?
I’ve served on several grant review committees and as a High Impact grant liaison for SAMMinistries during Covid—which meant that I served as their liaison for a few years. I grew to understand and admire their work, attending the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser and supporting Thanksgiving meals. That’s the beauty of our women’s giving collective-—learning about the individuals and families served by San Antonio’s nonprofit community.
What part of Impact’s mission resonates with you most?
I continue to be amazed at how efficiently our all-volunteer group manages grant applications, shepherding nonprofits through the award process and beyond. Everyone is professional, welcoming, and committed to excellence.
What would you say to someone considering joining Impact?
Each time I attend a Kickoff or Spring Fling, I share a photo on social media, encouraging my friends to “ask me about joining Impact.” And several friends have joined because they want to be part of our vibrant community!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work and volunteering?
When I’m not working or volunteering with the Conservation Society (find me at NIOSA!) I’m learning to play golf with a very patient coach. It’s slow but steady progress practicing this frustrating yet delightful sport.
