Kathann El-Amin’s background in nonprofit work was a vital reason that she joined Impact San Antonio in 2013 and has been a member ever since. She talked recently about that inspiration to join and get involved in our mission.
What inspired you to join Impact San Antonio?
I was so impressed with the efficiency of the grant process and award night. I was also amazed at the number of women who were in attendance and the camaraderie they shared.
How have you been involved in Impact SA — going to events, volunteering?
I have served on a selection committee, as a financial liaison with two different nonprofits, and have attended some of the wonderful luncheons provided where grant recipients make their follow-up presentations.
What impresses you the most about Impact SA?
What impresses me the most is the very idea of women forming a giving circle that provides substantial financial support to nonprofits in our own area. I like the diversity of mission of the nonprofits selected for awards.
What have you enjoyed the most about being a member?
I have enjoyed the Grant Award Nights and presentations the most. It’s really an exciting, boisterous and amazing night.
What keeps you coming back year after year?
I love the idea of being a part of a group that has as its mission to help those who help others.
What have you done for a living, and how did it influence your decision to join Impact SA?
I have worked for nonprofits since 1992. My paid employment included the SA Girl Scouts, the McNay Art Museum, Communities in Schools of SA and the American Research Center in Egypt. In all positions, I functioned as their chief financial officer, although that position went by different names in each organization. I am currently the volunteer treasurer for Bexar County Master Gardeners, another local nonprofit.
Working in the nonprofit arena made me more aware of the financial significance of a grant as large as the Impact SA awards. And I appreciated the simplicity of the application process and the wonderful assistance offered to the applying organizations. That is certainly not always the case.
I have always supported various nonprofits, but being able to join with other women and increase my gift by multiples remains a reason for my continued membership.
