You’ll often see Diane Lauer when she greets you at one of our events. She’s a cheerful person who enjoys participating in events and getting to know members and guests. Here is what she has to say about being a member of Impact San Antonio.
How did you first hear about Impact San Antonio? When did you join?
I first heard about Impact SA from a friend of mine, (Impact SA member and fellow Realtor) Diane Craig. We were socializing between sessions at a state conference, and Diane said to me, “Diane, you have a giving heart. I want to invite you to Grant Award Night for Impact San Antonio.” After some discussion, I put GAN on my calendar. I went to this impressive event, and as I say, I drank the Kool-Aid and was ready to sign up. I joined Impact SA in 2018 and have become more impressed as I have become more involved.
What impresses and inspires you about Impact SA?
Having worked in nonprofits for 30 years, I understand the difference that a $100,000 grant can have on the mission and morale of a nonprofit agency. Volunteering has been in my blood since elementary school, and it has been an essential part of my life. In all my experiences in volunteering, I can confidently say that Impact SA is the most organized and efficient all-volunteer organization that I have ever experienced. And it is a lot of fun! I have learned so much about the struggling nonprofit agencies in San Antonio, and I am proud to know that I am part of a group of women that significantly enhances the work of these deserving organizations.
What volunteer roles have you played in the organization?
After attending the New Member Orientation for Impact SA, I joined the Member Engagement Committee. I remain on that committee and have served as a greeter for many events. This gives me the opportunity to utilize my “natural gift of gab.” I enjoy meeting members as they come to these events and am happy to tell visitors about Impact SA. I have helped organize some visits to our grant recipients and I have twice served on a Grant Review Committee. I encourage all members to serve on one of these committees and really participate in the wonderful work we do.
What do you do for a living?
I consider myself semi-retired. I have been a Realtor for more than 19 years. Although real estate can be a more than full-time job, I now work only with past clients and referrals from past clients. This has allowed me to pursue my planned retirement job as a sign language interpreter. I was a counselor with the deaf for 30 years, and in preparation for retirement, I became a Certified Sign Language Interpreter in 2014. I have been working as an independent contractor since then, which allows me the opportunity to interpret at schools, job interviews and training, and all kinds of appointments. It is always different and interesting, and I like that.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Some of my interests are an obsession with my three dogs, Pittsburgh Steelers football, traveling, movies, cooking, gardening and reading. Just ask me — I will be glad to tell you more about those interests!
