President’s Message: Giving Makes us Happy!

Most of us recognize February as the month of Valentine’s Day. Maybe you know it as Black History Month, or possibly you know it as American Heart Month? February is also home to Feed the Birds Day, International Book Giving Day, Random Acts of Kindness Day, and National Love Your Pet Day, among many others. I don’t know who comes up with these or how they determine which day is for what thing, but have you ever noticed they are always about giving?

Sometimes they are about giving something-food, smiles, love. Sometimes they are about giving recognition to a cause, but invariably they are about giving. Why, do you think, we need so many reminders to give? I would venture to guess it’s because giving makes us happy! And we often forget that it’s okay and good to make ourselves feel good! When we give to others, and think about others rather than ourselves, we get a hit of that feel-good dopamine, too.

I like to think that Impact San Antonio provides a lot of opportunity to experience that goodness-feeling all throughout the year. It feels good to renew or join an organization of women who have all made the decision to invest in our community. So many of you have already joined or renewed this year that we are well on our way to achieving our goal of 500+ memberships so that we can award five $100,000 grants again this year. It feels amazing to watch a non-profit receive one of our grants, then use that money to complete a project that will greatly benefit the people they serve. Our volunteers tell us year after year how wonderful they feel to be a part of such a large team, working together to create significant impact in San Antonio and our surrounding area.

I saw a lot of this joy at our Membership Kick-Off event held on February 5 at The Veranda. If you weren’t able to join us, I would love for you to put a place holder in your calendar for our upcoming event. Registration is now open for our next social hour, “Put Your Best Foot Forward” on March 25 at Albi’s Vite in Leon Springs. Your membership team is planning a fun event. If you like shoes then this will be your time to shine! The upcoming Impact in Action: Lunch & Learn at SA Youth event scheduled for 3/7 has only a handful of open registrations left as of this writing. We often have space limitations that we must abide by, so please register early. (If the event registration reaches capacity, we turn off the registration option.) You can always look ahead to upcoming events by going to our website, impactsanantonio.org.

In my view, every day should be a day of recognition and giving. Recognizing that giving to others is essential to creating a stable, healthy community, and giving yourself grace to find joy in a manner that suits you is essential to keeping you YOU. Impact San Antonio needs all of you to continue our mission of creating transformational change through the collective giving model. Please join us to see just how big our impact can be.

Warm regards,

Yvonne Grothues, President, Impact San Antonio
