We’re excited to welcome new member, Barbara Hummel, to Impact San Antonio. Family, faith, and community are at the heart of everything Barbara does. With a long history of service through her church and local organizations in New Jersey, she joined Impact San Antonio to reconnect with meaningful volunteer work and build relationships with like-minded women who are passionate about making a difference.
What’s something fun or surprising about you that other members might not know?
I was adopted many years ago by a wonderful family who has since gone to be with our Lord. Afterward, I decided to do a little DNA research and found my birth mother and half-sister. Unfortunately, both have also passed on. Through this process, I discovered my half-nieces and uncovered more family history. This has been a really cool journey. Catholic Charities continues to search for my biological father, as I have been told he is still alive.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work and volunteering?
My husband and I love spending time with our two grandsons, who are four and two. We recently purchased a new home with a pool, so we can do fun water activities with them during the summer. When we are not with the boys, we love to go for long walks in the park and on the beach. I find joy in cooking and baking for others; I make cookies as gifts for friends and family during the holidays, and this is a labor of love.
What inspired you to join Impact San Antonio?
Prior to moving to Texas, I lived in a small town in New Jersey, where I was very involved in my church community through volunteer work. I was also on the board of the Junior Women’s Club. Every year with the Women’s Club, we held numerous events to raise money for local nonprofits. However, once we moved to Texas, I was so involved in activities with my children that I did not have time to work with any nonprofits. Now that they are grown, I need to get more involved.
What kind of community or connections are you hoping to build through Impact SA?
Building relationships with like-minded individuals is a great way to grow as a person. Impact SA has many different women, who are all working to support each other and others. There is no greater reward than being a part of such a great group. I hope to be more involved in upcoming activities and to make friends along the way.
