As a nonprofit, Impact San Antonio operates a little differently than a business. We have goals, responsibilities, and big ambitions — but at the heart of everything are volunteers generously giving their time, talents, and energy because they care about this mission. Everyone brings different strengths, different schedules, and different capacities—and somehow, when we all come together, incredible things happen.
That’s part of the beauty of Impact San Antonio. Ordinary people showing up when they can, doing what they can, and together accomplishing extraordinary things. We are not always polished or perfect, but we are passionate, committed, and remarkably effective. We’re like the Bad News Bears—scrappy, unconventional, and still finding ways to win.
And while many of us put pressure on ourselves to be perfect in any role we take on, it’s important to remember why we do this work in the first place. Yes, we want to do things well. Goals matter. But so do joy, laughter, camaraderie, and the satisfaction of making a meaningful impact together.
Which brings me to this: we are actively looking for members to consider serving on the Board of Directors. Truly, every single one of you is someone we would be excited to work alongside. It doesn’t matter what your professional background is, how long you’ve been a member, or whether you think you have the “right” experience. I have yet to meet an unimpressive Impact SA member.
Here are the functional areas of the Board: President, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President-Operations, Vice-President-Membership, Agencies & Applications, Grant Review, Marketing & Communications, Membership, Oversight & Outcomes, Sponsorships, Technology, Volunteers.
While not every role will be open next year, many of them can also be learned through volunteer opportunities outside of formal board service—making it a great way to explore where your interests and strengths might fit.
Most positions include a Co-Chair, so you are never doing it alone, and there are plenty of current and former board members who would be happy to talk honestly about what board service looks like. If you’re even a little curious, reach out to me, Yvonne Grothues at president@impactsanantonio.org or Kasandra Vitacca-Mitchell, at kmitchell@impactsanantonio.org and we can set up a coffee chat or an online meeting.
